PRISM Source Vocabulary
PRISM Source Vocabulary builds upon the foundation of PRISM Specifications and relies on the metadata fields and controlled vocabularies defined by PRISM. PSV defines XML structures for designing a content repository or for tagging source content, but it does not define its own metadata fields or controlled vocabularies. The development of PSV required the addition of new metadata fields and controlled vocabularies to support PSV functionality. Therefore PRISM 3.0 was published simultaneously with the publication of PSV 1.0 and is highly referenced by the PSV Specification.
Note: Both PAM and PSV are built on the foundation of PRISM 3.0. The PRISM Source Vocabulary was developed by the nextPub Working Group. Ongoing enhancements and maintenance of PSV will be handled by the PRISM Working Group under the undfied PRISM Metadata Initiative.

The Idealliance nextPub Initiative developed a family of specifications that form a framework to enable a new publishing paradigm for design-based publications such as magazines and display books. When the nextPub Initiative began, the immediate goal was to make multi-channel publishing both simple and efficient. That is, to meet the iPad challenge. But as the Working Group explored standards and technologies, strategists began to envision monetizing content beyond today&s publishing channels. Strategists began talking about developing a &lquo;Dynamic Content Architecture&rquo; from which new publishing channels can spring by assembling and delivering new content collections based on topics pulled from a multitude of magazine titles or based on personal preferences foretold by Flipboard, Pulse or Zite models. Based on this more aggressive vision, nextPub developed a set of specifications, known as the PRISM Source Vocabulary that serves as the basis for dynamic content publishing framework.
PSV is made up of a set of 4 documents:
- PRISM Source Vocabulary Specification Overview
- The PRISM Source Vocabulary Specification defines semantically rich for source metadata and content markup that can be transformed and served to a wide variety of output devices
- The PSV Markup Specification documents the XML tags in the PSV namespace that are used to encode XML Source Content
- This Guide documents mappings from PAM XML to PSV XML. It is normative only.
In addition to the written specifications, PSV includes a set of XML schemas.
