XTech 2005: XML, the Web and beyond.
We'll explain how BBC News' open data service grew from 4 RSS feeds, advertised by word-of-mouth, to one of the most comprehensive services for news on the net.
Along the way we'll look in detail at
- How we worked on changing BBC News' culture of 'absolute control' to an easy-going enthusiasm for sharing data.
- How we balanced risk, control and benefit to decide what to release
- The mistakes made and lessons learnt.
- What the benefits have been for BBC News and our users
- The challenges ahead and some of the things we plan to do.
It is intended that these experiences will be valuable for those interested in providing an open data service or currently implementing one.
