Social Media Attracts Attention of the FTC
Dick Gorelick in his recent Client Newsletter noted some companies are surreptitiously sponsoring positive messages to try to combat consumers who are free to say anything about anyone using the new social media. That may be about to change. For the first time in about 30 years, the Federal Trade Commission is considering revising its Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising. Bloggers would be held responsible for false statements about a product made on a blog or social network. An FTC official is quoted as saying that “those who are compensated to promote or review a product using these techniques are not exempt from the laws governing truthful advertising.”

IPA Scholarship Winner Maintains 4.0 GPA
IPA recently received a thank you note from Jaclyn L. Brunkhorst, a junior at University of Central Missouri, working toward a bachelor’s degree in graphic arts technology and management (GATM). While maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Jaclyn has worked two jobs; but she also has found time to serve as president of GATM’s Craftsmen’s Club, and she attended Graph Expo in 2008. IPA sponsors several graphic arts scholarships each year. Employees and family members of IPA members are given preference for these scholarships. Go to www.pgsf.org for application forms.
