Happy Holidays from IPA!
On behalf of the IPA Board of Directors and staff, we wish IPA members the warmth and love of good friends and family this holiday season. We appreciate your participation in and support of IPA programs and activities throughout the year. You are the reason IPA continues to be the leader in developing cutting-edge resources for improving and profiting from imaging workflow capabilities. The past few months have seen the world shaken by global economic upheaval, creating uncertainty in an industry already challenged by unprecedented change. Yet, IPA members are characterized by their fortitude and innovation that will help them weather the storm and maintain their leadership position in the industry. And as we look to 2009, IPA will be working with its membership to develop the resources needed to help members not only survive but thrive in these difficult times.

2009: A New Year, New Opportunities
The coming year will see the 44th Annual IPA Technical Conference being held June 8-10 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Rosemont, Illinois. The IPA Technical Conference is the industry's premier event for showcasing the latest advances in graphic technology and workflow innovations. In addition to in-depth conference sessions and a hands-on computer lab, IPA RoundUPs offer exhaustive testing and comparative studies that shed light on many of our industry’s newest technologies and process innovations.

Proofing RoundUPs at the Technical Conference will include hard proofing and soft proofing.

The RoundUP for hard proofing will test the current state of proofing and real world implementation. For printing to standard color managed files, IPA will solicit real world proofs that have been made to GRACoL™, SWOP™ #3 and #5, and SNAP™ specifications by “typical users” and determine the major sources of difficulty. The ADS of hard proofing solutions also will be evaluated under lab conditions.

The Soft Proofing RoundUP will relate to GRACoL Coated #1 printing conditions to demonstrate how well a soft proof compares to printed hard copy. Different software solutions and display types will demonstrate conditions when soft proofing is fully competitive with hard copy proofing and when it is not. The ADS of soft proofing solutions also will be evaluated. The JDF RoundUP will include an examination of the MIS to Prepress, ICS and MIS to Conventional Press ICS, and the LayCrimp test. These tests will help identify the strengths and opportunities for improvement and implementation of various JDF enabled solutions. More details and to join the conference discussion group >>

Woodford Report Reveals Resilient Imaging Industry The latest Woodford Group Imaging Industry Margin Index Report reveals a resilient industry with steady economic performance. The current report provides the most recent data points and analysis revealing key trends within the industry, as well as individual strengths and weaknesses of 12 key players: Brother, Canon, Epson, Heidelberg, HP, Konica Minolta, Kyocera Mita, Lexmark, Océ, Oki, Ricoh, and Xerox. Rob Sethre, CEO and principal analyst, commented, “It is interesting to note how resilient the imaging industry is, especially in light of the current economic difficulties. We see steady economic performance in key measures, which is a positive result in comparison to other more crisis-prone sectors of the economy. The results are not stellar, but also far from disastrous and above the low points of earlier reports. The results point to a dip but certainly not a dive in industry revenue and operating income.” More >>
